AUSTIN, Texas -- The rainy season has begun and some properties have already experienced flooding. In any natural disaster, residents and visitors are well-advised to follow the instructions of local emergency managers. Personal safety is always more important than possessions.

Even if you do not need to evacuate, you might experience some flooding from winter rains, since 25 percent of flood damage occurs outside flood plains and other areas prone to flooding. While a federal disaster declaration has not been issued for the flooding in southeast Texas, the Federal Emergency Management Agency offers the following tips for those affected by flood damage:

Most home insurance policies do not cover damage from floods. Flood insurance is available from agents certified to offer policies under the National Flood Insurance Program, but policies must be obtained at least 30 days before an actual flooding event. For information on flood insurance and other information related to flooding, visit www.floodsmart.gov on the World Wide Web.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident, initiates mitigation activities and manages the National Flood Insurance Program. FEMA works closely with state and local emergency managers, law enforcement personnel, firefighters and other first responders. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
