Galveston DRC to Close Permanently on Wednesday

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today announced that the Galveston Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) at 4700 Broadway will cease operations at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 21. The center opened Sept. 10, 2005, and provided services to some 10,200 visitors.

Holiday Schedule: All DRCs will observe regular hours on Friday, Dec. 23, except Houston, which will close for the day at noon. All DRCs will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, re-opening on Tuesday, Dec. 27. New Year's Schedule: All DRCs will observe regular hours on Friday, Dec. 30, but will be closed Saturday, Sunday and Monday, re-opening on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2006. Regular operating hours are as follows:

Visitors to DRCs can speak face-to-face with representatives from local, state and federal agencies, and volunteer organizations. Crisis counselors also are available. Disaster Assistance for individuals and families may include grants to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repairs and other serious disaster-related expenses not covered by insurance or other sources. Low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) also are available for residential and business losses not covered by insurance.
