Houston, TX -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has funded a 60-day crisis counseling grant to the Texas Department of Mental Health/Mental Retardation (TDMHMR) to provide immediate crisis counseling services for anyone affected by the recent storms.

Approximately 74 individuals will be hired to form teams to provide outreach to individuals and families in impacted areas, at schools and in other groups as requested.

Crisis counseling helps disaster victims recognize normal stress reactions and emotions caused or aggravated by a disaster. It helps victims gain emotional control and can offer simple steps to help them cope, including stress management techniques for adults and children.

"We urge people who are feeling depressed, angry, frustrated or overwhelmed to seek help," said Scott Wells, federal coordinating officer for FEMA. "Stress is a normal, common and - most often - temporary response following a disaster."

"No one who experiences a disaster goes untouched by it," said State Coordinating Officer Duke Mazurek. "We want people to know they can come to us for help, not only financial help but also emotional help."

Anyone who was affected by the disaster and is in need of crisis counseling or stress management and lives in any one of the counties designated a disaster area may call his or her county mental health services office.

To receive help or information on crisis counseling, visit the nearest FEMA/State Disaster Recover Center. The hours of operation at the 12 locations are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Disaster victims may call the Crisis Hotline numbers 24 hours a day.
