Baton Rouge, LA -- Unemployed and self-employed workers whose jobs were lost or interrupted by the effects of Hurricane Lili have until Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, to register for disaster unemployment.

The special disaster unemployment program applies only to those who are not covered by regular state unemployment insurance.

Disaster recovery officials said applicants should take their social security numbers with them when visiting the nearest state or parish unemployment registration office.

Disaster unemployment insurance covers those who can't work because their employment jobs were lost or interrupted by the storm, or can't travel to work because of debris-clogged or flooded roads; are self-employed but prevented from working due to the effects of storm damage; are the major support of a household that lost its usual head of household due to death or injury that resulted from the storm; and can't work because of injury caused as direct result of the disaster.
