Baton Rouge, LA -- The deadline for registering for disaster unemployment by those whose jobs were lost or interrupted by Tropical Storm Isidore is Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002.

Self-employed and unemployed workers not covered by regular state unemployment insurance programs may apply for this federally funded assistance, but the deadline for doing so is just days away.

Applicants should take their social security numbers with them when visiting the nearest state or parish unemployment registration office.

Disaster unemployment assistance is different from regular unemployment insurance.

It applies to those who can't work because their jobs were lost or interrupted by the storm, or can't travel to their workplace because of debris-clogged or flooded roads; are self-employed but prevented from working due to the effects of flooding; are the major support of a household because of injury or death to the usual head of household; and can't work because of injury caused as a direct result of the disaster.
