Disaster Housing Assistance Surpasses Million Dollar Mark

San Antonio, TX -- Less than ten days following the federal disaster declaration by President George W. Bush on September 26, more than $1 million in disaster housing assistance has been approved for those in the nine declared counties affected by Tropical Storm Fay. To date, more than 2,300 applications for assistance have been received from individuals who sustained disaster losses.
The Disaster Housing Program includes assistance for basic housing repairs, short-term rental assistance or reimbursement of hotel/motel expenses.
Scott Wells, federal coordinating officer said, "We urge everyone who has suffered losses in the declared counties to register for assistance."
State Coordinating Officer Duke Mazurek added, "Individuals need to make that one toll-free phone call. That's all it takes to register for disaster assistance. The registration process only takes about 15 to 20 minutes."
The FEMA toll-free registration number is 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The number for the hearing or speech impaired is 1-800-462-7585 TTY.
Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) are presently located in Brazoria, Live Oak and Nueces counties. DRC personnel can answer questions and supply information on disaster assistance and programs available.
