FEMA Announces Grant to Georgetown Fire Department

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will announce a $54,000 grant today to the Georgetown Fire Department. The grant is for purchasing two thermal imaging cameras and ten self-contained breathing apparatus. The announcement will be made at Georgetowns Fire Station 1, 103 W. 9th St. at 2 p.m. Georgetown Mayor Gary Nelon, City Manager Paul Brandenburg, FEMA Regional Director Ron Castleman, and Georgetown Fire Chief Anthony Lincoln will all be available at the announcement.
"Fire professionals respond to almost every emergency a community may experience," said Ron Castleman. "Our grant to the Georgetown Fire Department will help firefighters work more safely and effectively."
Chief Lincoln added, "This grant allows us to purchase advanced-technology equipment that has quickly become a crucial part of our toolkit. With the thermal imaging camera, our firefighters have what amounts to super-hero abilities to see through walls, look for victims in smoke-filled environments, and pinpoint hot spots. The additional SCBA units mean that we can put more firefighters into action at large fires and hazardous spills."
About 5,500 fire departments will receive awards before the end of the year as part of the $360 million Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program. The program makes awards in four functional areas: firefighting operations and safety; fire prevention; emergency medical services; and firefighting vehicle acquisition. As of November 25, FEMA has awarded 175 Texas fire departments over $11.1 million in fire grants for the calendar year 2002.
The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), a directorate of FEMA, posts all announced award recipients on its web site, www.usfa.fema.gov/grants. Future grant recipients will be listed as awards are made.
