LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- People who are unemployed because of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have less than two weeks to apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance. Officials urge those in need of disaster-related employment assistance to contact their state of residence department of labor before the Nov. 30 deadline.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance program extends income compensation to people who otherwise would be ineligible for unemployment compensation, such as farmers and self-employed individuals who are out of work as a result of the disasters.

Alabama

Displaced Alabama residents may file claims by calling 1-866-234-5382 . 

Louisiana

Claims for disaster unemployment assistance should be filed in person at any Louisiana Department of Labor One Stop or job center; online at www.LAWORKS.net ; or by calling 1-800-430-8076 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mississippi

Mississippi residents may file for Disaster Unemployment Assistance by calling 1-888-844-3577 from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. (CDT) Monday through Friday. They may also visit the Mississippi Department of Employment Security at www.mdes.ms.gov for a list of mobile and permanent WIN Job Centers to visit, or to print out, complete and mail an application to the M ississippi Department of Employment Security, PO Box 23068 , Jackson , MS 39225 .

People who suffered damages as a result of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita who have not registered with FEMA should do so by calling toll-free 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Individuals and families may also register online at www.fema.gov . People with a speech or hearing impairment can call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585..
