BATON ROUGE, La. -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in conjunction with state and local governments, and other federal and voluntary groups continue supporting recovery efforts for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
- Nationwide, more than 1.19 million households have received hurricane disaster assistance totaling more than $3.53 billion. To register, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY); or register online at www.fema.gov.
- More than 416,000 applications for Transitional Housing Assistance have been approved totaling $982 million.
- 3,365 inspectors have completed more than 450,000 residence inspections. These inspections are an important step in the federal/state recovery process.
- 429,324 people visited 97 Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) across the Gulf Coast. Representatives of state, federal, and voluntary agencies, as well as Customer Service Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration Office of Disaster Assistance are on hand at the DRCs to answer questions and provide recovery information.
- 59,197 Temporary Blue Roofs have been installed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE). The USACE has a FEMA-assigned mission to provide temporary repairs to roofs damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
- There are 22,847 evacuees of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in shelters in 12 states. This is down from a high of 273,000 evacuees in shelters.
- More than 47 million meals and snacks have been provided by the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army.
FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
