Louisiana Communities Test Preparedness

DENTON, Texas -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will evaluate community response to a simulated emergency at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Fort Gibson, Mississippi during a nuclear power plant exercise on Wednesday March 23, 2005. The exercise will test how well the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and the state and local governments can protect people who live near the plant.

FEMA will present preliminary findings of the off-site exercise in a public meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, March 25, at the Court House in Tensas Perish located at Courthouse Square in St. Joseph, Louisiana. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission will use FEMA’s report in licensing decisions.

Purpose: Graded, Radiological Emergency Preparedness Exercise

Participants:

FEMA prepares the nation for all hazards and manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, trains first responders, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration. FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
