FEMA and the State of Arkansas to Open a Disaster Recovery Center in Newark

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Arkansas Office of Emergency Services(OES)announced this morning that the Disaster Recovery Center in Wheatley will close at 6:00 p.m. Thursday, and re-open on Friday, January 29, in Independence County at the Community Center (old school cafeteria ) 4th Ave. and College Street, Newark.
The Center will provide an opportunity for victims of the severe storms, tornadoes and high winds that swept the state last week, to meet face-to-face with recovery experts and learn more about the various disaster assistance programs.
Graham Nance, Federal Coordinating Officer (FEMA) and David Maxwell, the State Coordinating Officer (OES), encourage anyone who suffered damage or loss and has already registered for assistance to visit a center in their area between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
"A variety of recovery programs are available for homeowners, renters and business owners affected by the storms," Maxwell said. "By going to a Center applicants can meet with representatives from FEMA, U.S. Small Business Administration and other federal, state, local and voluntary agencies. They will be able to get an update on their application and help completing the loan applications. Information will also be available on ways to minimize future damages from tornadoes and high winds."
Nance stressed that people should first register for disaster assistance before going a center. To register call toll-free 1-800-462-9029 (TTY 1-800-462-7585 for speech and hearing impaired persons) between the hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
