WASHINGTON, D.C. The National Weather Service (NWS) reports the remnants of Hurricane Bret crossed the west Texas border into Mexico yesterday, but up to three inches of rain could fall today from the trailing rain bands. NWS flash flood watches have been posted for the western counties in the state.
The American Red Cross reports all shelters are closed. Flooding has impacted some of the transportation network in the disaster area, mainly along secondary roads. Debris flow in the Intracoastal Waterway in Willacy County has forced officials to close the system until the US Army Corps of Engineers can assess the situation and clear the water.
US Coast Guard units are inspecting and repairing navigational aids along the waterway.
The Environmental Protection Agency is conducting hazardous material assessments of the disaster area.
The FEMA Headquarters Emergency Support Team continues to support response and recovery activities in Texas and also monitor the three Atlantic storms. The FEMA Regional Operations Center in Denton, Texas (Region VI) continues 24-hour operations.
