Stetten
Fellowship
Application
Deadline: December 31,
2007
Research
Proposal
- A full statement of the proposed
research, not more than 1500 words.
- In preparing your proposal, be
sure to: (a) describe the research you plan
to undertake at the National Institutes of Health,
including the methodology to be used; (b) explain
the importance of the work in relation to the
broader discipline and to your own scholarly
goals; (c) demonstrate why your research will
benefit by being in residence on the NIH campus.
- Estimate the time period required
for each phase of the research you propose.
- Indicate any special facilities
or support required to conduct the research
itself (not your living expenses). Please also
list any additional funding which you may receive.
- Attach relevant bibliographical
references.
Curriculum
Vitae
Be
sure to include previous and current fellowships,
grants, and awards as well as a brief description
of your research interests.
Official
Transcripts
Provide official transcripts
from all graduate institutions you have attended.
If English is not your native language, describe
the training you have received, tests you have
taken (with scores), and the level of your proficiency
in reading, conversing, and writing.
Letters
of Reference
Arrange
for your research proposal to be evaluated by
two persons familiar with your work. Letters of
reference must be mailed to the Office of NIH
History on institutional letterhead in a sealed
envelope with the referee's signature across the
flap. Letters may be emailed but must be followed
by a hard copy.
Notes
on Qualifications
- Applicants who were awarded the
Ph.D. within three years of the deadline submission
date will receive preference over those more
senior, as the purpose of the fellowship is
to encourage junior scholars. Candidates nonetheless
remain eligible if they received
their Ph.D.s more than three years previously.
- In general, applicants
are expected to come from programs in history,
history of science, history of medicine, and
history of technology. Candidates with backgrounds
in other disciplines will not be automatically
excluded.
- The program is open both
to U.S. citizens and to foreign nationals. The
latter must demonstrate fluency in English by
submitting scores on the Test of English as
a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or its equivalent.
- In evaluating applications,
priority will be given to those related to the
history of research programs sponsored by the
NIH intramural programs and to those concerned
with the emergence and impact of twentieth-century
biomedical technologies.
Duration of Fellowship
The Stetten Fellow will
be supported in residence at the Office of NIH
History for up to one year, with a minimum commitment
of six months being required. The Fellow may apply
for an extension of the appointment while in residence.
The Fellowship is awarded to support a period
of full-time research. Fellows will be expected
to devote a minimum of 40 hours a week to their
work.
Stipends
and Health Insurance
The
annual stipend for the Stetten Fellow is based
upon the stipend schedule for postdoctoral fellows
participating in the NIH Intramural Research Training
Award Program. This schedule is subject to change
under Federal guidelines. An updated statement
of the range for award amounts is available here.
The initial stipend check will be issued within
two weeks following the Fellow's arrival at NIH
and activation of the fellowship. Fellows may
acquire health insurance through the Foundation
for Advanced Education in the Sciences, Inc. (FAES).
Funds for individual or family low option health
insurance are provided in addition to the regular
stipend. Fellows may arrange for the difference
between the low option and other options to be
withheld from their stipend. No dependent's allowance
or travel allowances are provided in addition
to the annual stipend. Fellows who stay for less
than one calendar year will have their stipends
pro-rated for the period in which they are in
residence.
