Preliminary agenda includes Presentation of NTP FY 1995 Research and Testing
Plans and Interactive Discussion with the Board; review and action by the
Board on concepts for future contracts; brief reports from the NTP Director;
Environmental Toxicology Program Director; and updates on NTP grants, program
on alternative methods/ecotoxicology; Advisory Group on Toxicokinetics,

The Board will recommend action on chemicals nominated and recommended for
study by the Interagency Committee for Chemical Evaluation and Coordination
(ICCEC) and time will be allowed for public comment on the chemicals as well.
Chemicals being considered for recommendation by the ICCEC prior to the Board
meeting are: Dimethyl adipate; 2,3 Butanedione; 2,2'-Dipyridyl; Methyl styryl
ketone; N-Bromosuccinimide; and 5-Nitroindazole.

The NIEHS announces a request for applications (RFA) entitled
"Mechanistically-based Alternative Methods In Toxicology."
The announcement invites applications to conduct research to develop
mechanistically-based alternative methods and models for toxicological
research and testing. The RFA is being issued to foster the development,
validation, and use of improved testing and research methods that
either do not require the use of animals, that reduce the number of
animals, or that involve the use of alternatives such as non-mammalian
species. It is anticipated that improved testing methods that incorporate
new knowledge regarding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of toxicity
will be developed and validated, and existing test methods will be refined
to utilize new scientific information and techniques. Toxicological test
methods/model systems are encouraged in the priority areas of
carcinogenicity, neurotoxicity, and developmental toxicity, but will
be considered for any area of toxicity testing. Examples of alternative
methods and models that may be appropriate for development under this
program include genetically-engineered cell lines, non-mammalian and
invertebrate species, transgenic animals, and computer based prediction
and modeling systems. The anticipated funding level (total costs) is
$1.5 million per year for three years and it is estimated that eight
to ten grants will be awarded. The deadline for a letter of intent is
November 15, 1994, and applications must be received by December 20, 1994.
The anticipated date of award is July 1, 1995. To obtain a copy of the RFA,
contact Dr. Heindel.

In addition to contacting the NIEHS directly, the Institute makes available
selected information in electronic format world-wide. For example, the
NTP Annual Plan, The Annual Report on Carcinogens (Summary),
Abstracts of NTP Reports
, and the Status of All NTP Studies are all available on the NIEHS Gopher Client Server. To view this information requires access to the Internet and internet client software, e.g., Gopher or Mosaic. The server is located at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the address is ntp.niehs.nih.gov.
