Description:

In FY 2007, NIH Institutes awarded $2.9 billion for research centers. The largest portion of this ($664 million) when to support U54 (Specialized Centers Cooperative Agreement) grants. U54s create a multidisciplinary focus on a disease of biomedical problem. The next largest category was P50 (Specialized Center) grants, for which support totaled $637 million. P50s may involve ancillary support activities such as patient care. They differ from program project grants in that they are usually developed in response to an institute initiative and subsequently receive continuous attention from its staff. P30 (Center Core) grants received $572 million in funding. P30s support shared resources and facilities for a multidisciplinary research team or a group of investigators focusing on a common research topic. Funded independently of a center's component or program projects, the core grant provides accessible resources.
