Introduction and Goals

Bacterial and viral infections of the gastrointestinal tract account for a greatly underappreciated burden of morbidity and mortality domestically and overseas. The enteric pathogens cause disease symptoms ranging from mild gastroenteritis to life-threatening systemic infections and severe dehydrating diarrhea.
