MARC Proposal No. 2008-09

Proposal 2008-09: Definition of Videorecording format codes in field 007/04 of the MARC 21 bibliographic format

1. BACKGROUND

Blu-ray and HD DVD (High-Definition Digital Versatile Disc) are newer digital video formats that are capable of storing more data than standard DVD videos. They are both the same physical size (4 ¾ inch) as a standard DVD, however, both Blu-ray and HD DVD require different players from standard DVD videos. It is thus important to be able to distinguish them when displaying information about them to patrons and when providing search-limiting functionality. Although Blu-ray and HD DVD is generally recorded in a note field in the bibliographic record when applicable, there is currently no machine-based method of distinguishing among the various digital video formats.

2. DISCUSSION

2.1. Current definition of Videorecording field 007/04

Videorecording field 007/04 (Videorecording format) currently includes codes describing videotape or videodisc recording formats. The following codes are defined:

2.2. Definition of codes “r” (HD DVD) and “s” (Blu-ray Disc) in Videorecording 007/04

Codes “r” (HD DVD) and “s” (Blu-ray Disc) may be defined in the Videorecording field 007/04 (Videorecording format) to code for videorecordings on HD DVD and Blu-ray formats. These codes would not overlap with code “v” (DVD) because HD DVD and Blu-ray formats require different players from a standard DVD videos.

3. PROPOSED CHANGES

In Videorecording field 007/04 (Videorecording format) of the MARC 21 bibliographic format:
