NAME: Definition of Second Indicator (Display constant controller) in 76X-78X Linking Entry Fields in the USMARC Bibliographic Format
SOURCE: Library of Congress
SUMMARY: This paper proposes the addition of a second indicator in the 76X-78X fields to control the generation of a display constant. Because subfield $i was defined in the linking entry fields recently, there needs to be a mechanism to suppress the tag related display constant to enable the substitution of text in subfield $i.

PROPOSAL NO. 97-2: Definition of Second Indicator (Display constant controller) 1. BACKGROUND Proposal No. 96-4 (Defining a Constituent Unit Entry Field in the USMARC Bibliographic Format) was approved in January 1996. It proposed a field for recording descriptive information about items that are constituents or elements of the item being cataloged or contained in the collection, group, or set being cataloged. Two options were presented: broadening existing field 770 (Supplement/Special Issue Entry) or adding a new field 774. In considering the relationships between field 770, 772, 773 and a possible new field 774, the paper detailed the need for a second indicator value to control the display constant in field 772 (Parent Record Entry), since currently only "Supplement to:" is generated based on the field tag. The map community has used this field as a link to the parent for single issues of series. To accommodate this need in field 772 and the need for a display constant controller in the new field 774 (which was the selected option for constituent unit entries), a second indicator was defined in both fields. In addition, subfield $i (Display text), which was needed in the new field 774, was approved for use in all 76X-78X linking entry fields for text to replace the system generated constant associated with the other values in the second indicator. 2. DISCUSSION In the 76X-78X Linking Entry fields the second indicator is defined for fields 780 (Preceding Entry) with seven values and 785 (Succeeding Entry) with eight values. Although the definition of this indicator is Type of relationship, essentially it is used to control a display constant associated with the field. The second indicator is now defined in fields 772 and 774 as Display constant controller as follows: 772 Display constant controller # Supplement to 0 Parent 8 No display constant generated 774 Display constant controller # Constituent unit 0 Includes 8 No display constant generated Proposal 96-4 suggested defining value # as "No information provided" in field 772; this would allow for existing records to be accommodated and the field related display constant documented in the format would be used for value #. However, the MARBI committee preferred to define # as the actual display constant to be used. In the case of field 772, "Supplement to" was associated with the field tag and value 0 was added for items that are single issues and use the field to link to the parent. In the case of field 774 the second indicator values presented in the paper were based on what would be used if the first option, broadening the use of field 770, were selected. Thus, value # would be used to generate the tag related display constant (Supplement to) and value 0 was added for the constituent unit situation (using "Includes" because it was more generic than "Constituent unit"). However, when the proposal was approved to use field 774, the committee did not take a close look at how those second indicator values would apply to a new field, where there were no existing records to consider. The values # (Constituent unit) and 0 (Includes) are meant to accommodate the same situation and they need to be combined. Since subfield $i was defined across linking entry fields, a display constant controller is needed to suppress the tag associated display constant and allow the text in subfield $i to substitute for it. A second indicator is needed in the following fields: 760 Main Series Entry 762 Subseries Entry 765 Original Language Entry 767 Translation Entry 770 Supplement/Special Issue Entry 773 Host Item Entry 775 Other Edition Entry 776 Additional Physical Form Entry 777 Issued With Entry 786 Data Source Entry 787 Nonspecific Relationship Entry In each field value # could be defined as the tag related display constant documented in the format and value 8 as No display constant provided. All fields except 786 and 787 have display constants associated. Fields 786 and 787 could define the indicator with value # meaning "No information provided", or they could be excluded from the list of fields with the second indicator defined. CONSER is interested in using the indicator value to allow for including display text in subfield $i. PROPOSED CHANGES The following is presented for consideration: - In the USMARC Bibliographic Format define the second indicator value in fields 760, 762, 765, 767, 770, 773, 775, 776, and 777 as follows; Second Indicator Display constant controller # [Tag related phrase] 8 No display constant generated In each field, the display constant associated with the field tag will be generated when value # is used. - In the USMARC Bibliographic Format define the second indicator in fields 786 and 787 as follows: Second Indicator Display constant controller # No information provided 8 No display constant generated - In field 774, delete value 0 (Includes) in the second indicator. See Attachment A for a description of this field if this proposal is approved. ------------------------------------------------------------------ ATTACHMENT A < > indicates addition; [ ] indicates deletion 76X-78X Linking Entries--General Information 760 Main Series Entry (R) 762 Subseries Entry (R) 765 Original Language Entry (R) 767 Translation Entry (R) 770 Supplement/Special Issue Entry (R) 772 Parent Record Entry (R) 773 Host Item Entry (R) 774 Constituent Unit Entry (R) 775 Other Edition Entry (R) 776 Additional Physical Form Entry (R) 777 Issued With Entry (R) 780 Preceding Entry (R) 785 Succeeding Entry (R) 786 Data Source Entry (R) 787 Nonspecific Relationship Entry (R) Indicators First Note controller 0 Display note 1 Do not display note Second 760-770, 773[,]<->[775]-777 <Display constant controller> [Undefined] # <Tag related phrase> [Undefined] 8 No display constant generated> <786-787 Display constant controller # No information provided 8 No display constant generated> 772 Display constant controller # Supplement to 0 Parent 8 No display constant generated [774 Display constant controller Constituent unit [0 Includes] 8 No display constant generated] 780 Type of relationship 0 Continues 1 Continues in part 2 Supersedes 3 Supersedes in part 4 Formed by the union of ... and ... 5 Absorbed 6 Absorbed in part 7 Separated from 785 Type of relationship 0 Continued by 1 Continued in part by 2 Superseded by 3 Superseded in part by 4 Absorbed by 5 Absorbed in part by 6 Split into ... and ... 7 Merged with ... to form ... 8 Changed back to
