College Scholarship Awards

AG Bell 2009 College Scholarship Awards Program

The AG Bell College Scholarship Awards Program for the 2009-2010 school year is currently closed.  The deadline was April 20, 2009.

Applicants who provided an email address have been sent an email message notifying them of the status of their application.

All eligible applications are currently being considered by the review committee.  Final decisions will be made mid-summer, and letters of notification will be mailed in late July to those who were not selected to receive an award as well as those who were selected.

The competition is very strong this year; 282 eligible applications were received for 20 awards.

Award Criteria

In order to be eligible for this program, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:
  • Hearing loss must have been diagnosed prior to age seven (during the language-learning years).
  • Hearing loss must be bilateral and in the moderate to profound range. Applicants must have an unaided Pure-Tone Average (PTA) of 60dB or greater in the better hearing ear in the speech frequencies of 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz. Applicants with cochlear implants meet this eligibility requirement. Unilateral (one-sided) hearing loss does not qualify.

    Formula for calculating the PTA:
On the unaided audiogram, look at the results for the better hearing ear at 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz and add those three numbers together, then divide that total by three. The result is the Pure Tone Average. To be eligible for this award, the applicant’s PTA must be 60 or greater.

  • Spoken communication must be the student’s primary mode of communication.
  • Applicant must be enrolled in or have applied to a mainstream and accredited college/university as a full-time student.

Note:

  • Applicants are eligible for one scholarship per school year and are limited to a total of two scholarship awards in total.
  • Scholarship awards range from $1,000 to $10,000 with most being in the $1,000 to $5,000 range. Applicants should not request a specific amount; recipients and award amounts are determined by a committee of volunteers and all decisions are final.
