A unique student research internship, which can be 4 to 8 weeks in length, is offered in Occupational Therapy. The student elects this internship, after the required Level II internships are completed. The student is then assigned to an ongoing clinical research project and works in collaboration with a senior staff member. The intent of the internship is to provide the student with entry-level skills for clinical research and an awareness of the practical issues which arise when one engages in systematic collection and analysis of data.

During the internship, a research seminar that is developed here and led by the education coordinator is offered. The seminar, a 4-session curriculum provides a time during which students can discuss the real-life problems of being an ethical researcher. It focuses on the bioethics of human subject research and employs a series of videotapes, "Integrity in Scientific Research," produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Since the intent is to cover the salient ethical issues in a clear fashion and to make the student’s understanding more experiential and not only intellectual, the seminar uses the videotape series along with pertinent journal articles from the bioethics literature, news articles and American Occupational Therapy Association policy documents to stimulate discussion and beginning understanding among the students.
