Dr. Philip Gold joined the National Institute of Mental Health in 1974 as a clinical associate in the Section on Psychiatry in the Laboratory of Clinical Science. He has been with NIMH ever since, heading first the Unit on Affective Disorders and then the Section on Neuroendocrinology. In 1987, he took his current position as chief of the Clinical Neuroendocrinology Branch. His research has focused on the anatomic, molecular, and physiological aspects of the generalized stress response and its relationship to major depression.
Dr. Gold earned his undergraduate and medical degrees at Duke University. He did his internship in internal medicine at the Boston City Hospital followed by a residency in psychiatry at the Massachusetts Mental Health Center.
Dr. Lawrence Nelson spent several years in private practice in obstetrics
and gynecology in Lynchburg, Virginia. He then took research posts in London
and Washington, D.C., before joining the Developmental Endocrinology Branch
of NICHD in 1988 as a research fellow. In 1996 he took his current post
as a staff physician and senior surgeon with the Section on Women's Health
Research.
He earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Westminster College and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He did his internship and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles County Medical Center.
Dr. Nelson's research has focused on various aspects of fertility, including
today's topic, premature ovarian failure.
