Over $400,000 In Public Assistance For Disaster Recovery On The Kenai Peninsula

Anchorage, AK -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the State of Alaska are in the process of approving over $400,000 in Public Assistance money to help various local and state agencies in the Kenai Peninsula Borough, recover from the winter-storm of March 6-15, 2003. Public Assistance is a cost-sharing program with FEMA paying 75% and the State of Alaska paying 25%.
Homer Electric Association (HEA), the Kenai Peninsula Borough (KPB), the Nikiski Pool, the State Department of Transportation (DOT), and the Alaska Division of Forestry (DNR) all applied for assistance under the FEMA program. Approved for inclusion in the cost-sharing program are:
HEA
- Emergency protective measures $51,347 (Clearing trees etc)
- Permanent repair/replacement $205,965 (Power poles, lines, transformers, etc)
- Mitigation $30,894 (falling danger trees near power lines)
KPB
- School damage $22,411 (local and Tyonek)
- Emergency protective measures $2010 (CES and EOC operations)
DOT - State
- Building repairs $3,300 (maintenance shop - north Kenai)
Estimates on projects still under review
- DNR - Emergency Protective Measures $45,000 estimated (Anchor Point fire response)
- KPB - Nikiski Pool $44,000 estimated (electrical repairs)
While FEMA has given its approval for most of the projects, the state must still review them and make its recommendations. The total approved by FEMA for Public Assistance, including the estimates on projects still under review, is $404,927. $303,695 of that would be FEMA's share and $101,232 would be the state's share. Public Assistance projects in Anchorage and the Mat-Su Borough are also being considered.
