Monroe Schools Connect with FEMA Computers
Drop, Cover and Hold Exercise Takes on Electronic Twist

SEATTLE, Wash. -- Over the last 12 months the Federal Emergency Management Agency regional office has donated truckloads of surplus computer and related communications equipment to Monroe Public Schools, allowing students such as those at Chain Lake Elementary and other schools increased exposure to high-tech education applications. The equipment was transferred under Presidential Executive Order 129999, which allows government-to-schools transfer of excess computers under the Computers for Education initiative. According to FEMA regional director David L. de Courcy, the donated equipment can enhance student access to high-tech applications.
"Putting computers in schools is a priority for this Administration, and we are proud to be able to help," said de Courcy. "Monroe Public Schools have been particularly proactive in increasing their students' access to computer skills and electronic multi-media educational tools."
No argument from Monroe Public Schools secondary education director Mike Murphy. "We are so pleased to be the recipients of FEMA computers, and we've created and upgraded many student work stations," said Murphy. "Appropriately, this month is Disaster Preparedness Month in Washington State, and we'll be using the new equipment to reinforce emergency preparedness concepts and earthquake survival skills during this week's state-wide 'Drop, Cover and Hold' exercise."
