Richland, Wash. -- Residents and businesses in the southern portion of Benton County will begin receiving their emergency notification radios in September.

The Tone Alert Radios (TARs) are being distributed as part of the Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program (CSEPP). The TARs are an essential part of preparing southern Benton County for the unlikely event of an emergency at the Army's Umatilla Chemical Depot.

All residents and businesses located within the Immediate Response or Protective Action Zones of southern Benton County are eligible to receive a radio free of charge. Another feature of the radio is that it picks up the National Weather Service forecast information.

Staff from Benton County Emergency Management (BCEM) and the Washington State Emergency Management Division will be distributing the TARs throughout the month of September. The public can bring identification and written proof of their physical street address (such as a bill) and pick up the radios at the following locations:

In addition to the TARs, south Benton County residents will receive start-up sheltering kits. These kits will include a roll of plastic for covering windows and vents, a roll of duct tape and a pair of scissors. There will also be a Shelter in Place video and other informational materials.

Questions may be addressed to Troy Berglund, Benton County Emergency Management Public Information Officer, at (509) 628-2600.
