Lacey, Wash. -- The Washington Emergency Management Division's Public Assistance (PA) Program is helping public assistance applicants by providing applicant briefings. Briefings will be held in six counties for local governments and certain private non-profit (PNP) organizations that suffered damages during the recent storms. Representatives from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be available at the meetings.

Clallam, Jefferson, King, Skagit, Snohomish and Wahkiakum counties were included in the counties designated for Public Assistance under all categories with the Presidential Disaster Declaration of Dec. 8, amended Dec. 19, 2007. The briefings are scheduled for Jan. 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10, 2008.

The PA Grant Program is designed to provide assistance to states, local governments, Indian tribes and certain private non-profit organizations to alleviate suffering and hardship resulting from major disasters or emergencies declared by the President.

Through the PA Program, FEMA provides supplemental Federal disaster grant assistance for the repair, replacement, or restoration of disaster-damaged, publicly owned facilities and the facilities of certain PNP organizations.

The PA Program also encourages protection from future damage by providing assistance for eligible hazard mitigation measures during the recovery process.

The Federal share of assistance is not less than 75% of the eligible cost for emergency measures and permanent restoration. The grantee (usually the state) determines how the non-federal share (up to 25%) is split with the subgrantees (eligible applicants).
