Dr. Edwards' research focuses on the identification, mechanism, regulation and physiological role of neurotransmitter transporters. To this end, he has identified and characterized the vesicular monoamine, acetylcholine and GABA transporters, and most recently a glutamine and a glutamate transporter. He is studying their effects on synaptic physiology, as well as their biophysics, membrane trafficking, and regulation. According to his colleagues, Edwards has greatly advanced the field of synaptic transmission, causing textbooks to be rewritten.
