Discovering the neural basis of addiction and relapse to drugs of abuse is one primary goal of research in dr. Kalivas’ laboratory. This discovery process crosses many technical disciplines, ranging from genomic and proteomic techniques to identifying changes in gene and protein expression produced during addiction to animal models of addiction where one can evaluate the role of cellular changes in the addiction process. The other primary goal of research in the laboratory is to characterize the anatomical and cellular substrates of working memory. Again, this involves many technical approaches.
