Specialties: Stroke, neuroprotection, central regulation of cerebral blood flow and metabolism, and circulation.

Dr. Eugene Golanov joined NINDS in 2006 as a Program Director in the Neural Environment cluster. He administers research in the areas of stroke, neuroprotection, and central regulation of cerebral blood flow and metabolism. His interests include understanding the pathogenic mechanisms underlying brain cell damage and functional disorders following stroke, neuroprotection at cellular and brain levels, global and local regulation of cerebral blood flow and metabolism and their disorders. Dr. Golanov graduated from First Moscow Medical School and received his doctorate in Normal Physiology from the Institute of Normal Physiology in Moscow, Russia, where he also received his post-doctoral training. He worked for over 8 years at the All-Union Cardiology Research Center studying mechanisms of central regulation of blood pressure and hypertension. In 1990, Dr. Golanov joined the laboratory of Neurobiology of Dr. Donald Reis at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, where he studied central neuronal mechanisms of cerebral blood flow and metabolism regulation, stroke and endogenous neuroprotection for over 10 years. Before joining NINDS in 2006, Dr. Golanov continued his studies as a professor and director of research at the department of Neurosurgery at the University of Mississippi Medical School. Dr. Golanov is a member of the American Physiological Society, American Heart Association, Society for Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism, and the Society for Neuroscience.
