Atlanta, GA -- The City of Destin, Florida, will receive a $53,480 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to flood-proof its harbor flushing station, thereby reducing the chance of water contamination during natural disasters. Plans call for elevating the pump station two feet above the 100-year base flood elevation.

"Protecting the public's health is a critical part of government at all levels," said FEMA Region IV Director Kenneth O. Burris. "That includes being able to pump and process wastewater even during hurricanes and floods."

The $53,480 represents 75 percent of the project's estimated total cost. The remaining 25 percent ($17,827) will be covered equally by state and local governments.

"We are happy to partner with FEMA and the city of Destin to see this project through to completion," said Governor Jeb Bush. "Protecting the environment and the public during times of crisis is one of our utmost priorities."

The grant is a part of FEMA's Hazard Mitigation Grant Program designed to help state and local governments take actions now to prevent or reduce the adverse impacts of future disasters.
