Atlanta, GA -- WKRG-TV Channel 5 in Mobile, Alabama, was recognized by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Region IV Saturday for its work in promoting hazard mitigation within its viewing area. In June 2000, the station pledged to serve as the Alabama Gulf Coast Project Impact Initiative Media Partner and has been active in promoting disaster mitigation ever since.

"While we cannot prevent hurricanes, tornadoes and other disasters from occurring, we can do something to reduce the possibility of personal injury and the amount of property damage," said FEMA Region IV Director Ken Burris. "The station has performed an invaluable service to inform and educate its viewers about disaster mitigation, prevention and preparedness. That is what Disaster Resistant Communities are all about."

The station has been instrumental in promoting disaster mitigation and preparedness to citizens along the Gulf Coast of Alabama, Florida and Mississippi. An example of the station's dedication to the effort was its "STORM 2000," a one-hour special telecasts in prime time.

The award was presented during the Southeast Disaster Resistant Communities Summit in Charleston, South Carolina, on June 22. The award was in the Local Business category, one of 12 categories in which government entities, businesses and individuals were recognized for their work in safeguarding communities by making them more resistant to natural disasters. Award recipients were nominated by county, state or federal emergency management workers.
