Federal Disaster Funds Authorized For Alabama To Aid Local Government Tropical Storm Recovery

Washington, D. C. -- The head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today designated the counties of Baldwin and Mobile in southwestern Alabama eligible for federal disaster funds to help local governments recover from the effects of Tropical Storm Isidore.
FEMA Director Joe M. Allbaugh took the action immediately after President Bush declared a major disaster for the state as a result of damage to public property from the storm that occurred over the period of September 23 through October 1.
Under the declaration, federal funds will be provided for the state and affected local governments in the two designated counties to pay 75 percent of the eligible cost for debris removal, emergency services related to the storm, and the restoration of damaged public facilities. Funding also will be available to the state on a cost-shared basis for approved projects that reduce future disaster risks.
Allbaugh indicated that additional designations may be made later if requested and warranted by the results of further damage assessments. He named Charles M. Butler of FEMA to serve as the federal coordinating officer for the recovery effort.
Butler said that procedures for requesting assistance will be explained at a series of applicant briefings at locations to be announced shortly in the affected areas.
