Release Date: August 5, 2001
Release Number: R4-01-22

Atlanta, GA -- The Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Region IV headquarters activated its regional operations center Sunday afternoon to monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Barry.

The decision was made to activate the center at noon today after Barry increased in intensity and appeared to be headed for landfall along the Florida-Alabama coastline.

The center serves as the main coordination point between all federal agencies with disaster responsibilities and state and local governments affected by a disaster. It will remain open until the threat of the storm has passed.

Essential federal agency staff have been activated and others are on standby. Staff are currently coordinating with disaster officials in the states of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi, and are keeping the President and FEMA Director Joe Albaugh apprised of all developments. FEMA liaison staff are also on duty in the Florida, Alabama and Mississippi state emergency operations centers.
