MONTGOMERY, Al.--The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with current residents in Zirlott Park in Mobile County to address their long-term housing needs.

"Zirlott Park has served its purpose," said Federal Coordinating Officer Mike Bolch. "It was only intended as a short-term housing facility when no other options were available. Alabama's disaster recovery has reached a point where there are more appropriate housing solutions available that provide residents with better access to resources and services."

Residents who meet certain criteria may be able to purchase the unit they are currently living in and move it to a private spot or a commercial lot. Others may choose to have their unit moved to a commercial trailer park. Some residents may also choose to use FEMA rental assistance funding to rent an apartment. The agency has identified many available rental properties in Mobile County.

For those who are no longer eligible for FEMA assistance, the agency has worked with volunteer agencies around Alabama to compile a list of groups that can provide housing assistance. Many are also able to provide other aid like food and help locating employment. All Zirlott Park residents receive this referral list and can take advantage of these services.
