Biospecimen resources are crucial to the research community in the performance of postgenomics cancer research. However, the manner in which biospecimens are collected and subsequently handled, the quality of the biospecimen-associated information, and ethical, legal, and policy parameters can affect biospecimen quality and usefulness. There are currently no standardized procedures for collecting, processing, storing, and distributing biospecimens. Using input from researchers, physicians, ethics and legal experts, and patient advocates, NCI developed the NCI Best Practices for Biospecimen Resources, a document that outlines technical, operational, ethical, legal, and policy best practices for the use of biospecimens in research. This document was approved by the National Cancer Advisory Board in June 2007. 06/2007
