Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death among people with diabetes, accounting for at least two out of three diabetes-related deaths. Physicians are encouraged to talk with diabetes patients about their increased risk for heart disease and stroke. This CD-ROM offers a set of 26 reproducible patient education handouts on topics related to diabetes CVD. Topics include pre-diabetes, getting the best care for diabetes, taking care of type 2 diabetes, blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, making wise food choices, choosing dietary fats wisely, cooking with heart healthy foods, how to read food labels, carbohydrate counting, weight loss, physical activity, how to begin a program of exercise, behavior change, recognizing and handling depression, treating high blood pressure (hypertension), treating high cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia), the signs of a heart attack, prevention strategies, taking aspirin, stroke, peripheral arterial disease, medical tests and procedures for finding and treating heart and blood vessel disease, managing medicines, and recordkeeping strategies.
