varied and include topic areas ranging from practice specific courses
to professional development.

Specialty Service Fellowships
There are several Fellowships available within
the Department of Laboratory Medicine.
- Chemistry Fellowship Program
The Clinical Chemistry Fellowship is a two-year
program providing training in the various aspects of clinical
chemistry together with clinical and/or translational research
opportunities. The Clinical Chemistry Service at the NIH provides
all the chemical diagnostic testing for the patients in the Clinical
Center, as well as for outpatient clinics. The senior staff is
composed of four individuals with M.D. and/or Ph.D. degrees.
Approximately 260,000 tests are performed per month by a technical
staff of 45 medical technologists, and chemists.

Fellowship Program
- Hematology Reseach Fellowship
The Hematology Research Fellowship
is a two-year program providing experience in laboratory and/or
clinical investigation under the direction of a Senior Staff
Hematologist. The Fellowship also offers opportunities in clinical
hematology consultation, bone marrow interpretation, and the
clinical hematology laboratory.

Fellowship
- Immunology Fellowship Program
The Clinical Laboratory Immunology (CLI) training
program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a one-year
fellowship program approved by the Accreditation Council for
Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The CLI program is based in the immunology laboratory,
which serves the NIH Clinical Center, and the training consists
of both laboratory and clinical exposure. Additional faculty
and teaching support within the NIH are through the National
Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (Drs. Metcalfe, Strober,
Malech) and the Laboratory of Pathology in the National Cancer
Institute (Dr. Stettler-Stevenson).
This program is open to physicians certified
by the American Board of Pediatrics or the American Board of
Internal Medicine who have completed subspecialty training in
allergy-immunology, rheumatology, nephrology, pulmonology, or
infectious diseases. Additional information and applications
can be obtained through the NIH Office of Education.

- Microbiology Fellowship Program
A two-year training program is offered to Ph.D.s
and M.D.s interested in clinical microbiology. The program is
designed to develop knowledge and skill in diagnostic microbiology,
clinical consultation related to microbiology and infectious
diseases, and clinical laboratory management. A strong emphasis
is also placed on laboratory research, particularly on the development
of new diagnostic tests and on collaborative projects performed
in conjunction with clinical protocols ongoing at the NIH. Individuals
