General Policy:
A prospective patient must be referred by a physician, a dentist, or by an
appropriate agency and must have a condition or disease of interest in one
or more research projects. A prospective patient can be a self-referral after
discussion with a research protocol point of contact. Except in an emergency,
no patient shall be admitted to the Clinical Center
until after a provisional diagnosis has been stated and proper
identification given to the admissions unit by the member of the institute
medical staff recommending admission.
In an emergency, a patient not fulfilling these requirements may be admitted
if, in the opinion of the Clinical Center examining physician, transfer to
another medical facility would adversely affect his/her condition. A patient
admitted under emergency circumstances will be discharged or transferred to
another medical facility when, in the opinion of his/her attending NIH physician,
such transfer will not adversely affect his/her condition.
