Communication Science in Action:
Genetic Counseling

Life changing secrets of the Human Genome are being revealed on a daily basis. Meanwhile, numerous health communication researchers are devoting their considerable expertise to the challenge of making genetics science understandable and actionable for the public.

The genetics counselor is one critical partner in our effort to help individuals and their families make informed decisions regarding their genetic risks for cancer. Highlights of the HCIRB genetics communication research portfolio are exemplary of how cancer communication research is informing their work.

June Peters, is a genetics counselor at NCI. Her job is to introduce the fast changing cancer genetics science into the context of existing family dynamics and guide their exploration of options for managing their cancer risks.
