ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) toll-free disaster assistance registration lines begin new hours. Effective Sunday November 7, 2004, the toll-free registration line will be available from 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week.
North Carolinians who suffered damage from Tropical Storm Frances or Hurricane Ivan, but who have not yet applied, should call the registration line, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) to begin the recovery process. For the hearing or speech impaired, the TTY number is 1-800-462-7585. Both toll-free numbers will be available 6 a.m. to midnight, seven days a week, starting Sunday, November 7, 2004.
FEMA also is available to answer applicant questions by calling the same toll-free numbers and selecting the "Helpline" option. Helpline operators are available from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week.
On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages Citizen Corps, the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
