Dynamics of Brain Phospholipid and Fatty Acid Metabolism: A position is available to quantify dynamics of brain phospholipid and fatty acid metabolism in relation to dietary composition of nutritionally essential polyunsaturated fatty acids, signal transduction, neuroinflammation, ischemia, and the action of centrally acting drugs for treating bipolar and other psychiatric/neurodegenerative disorders. Studies on unanesthetized rodents, including genetic models, involve measuring incorporation into tissue lipids of intravenously injected radiolabeled arachidonic or docosahexaenoic acid. Data are related to tissue expression of relevant regulatory enzymes and trophic factors, and are used to calculate fatty acid turnover and incorporation rates in phospholipids. Techniques include GC/MS, HPLC and TLC, isolation procedures for tissue lipids, enzyme activity assays, radiotracer kinetics, molecular biology, and general biochemistry.
Applicants should have a Ph.D. or M.D. degree earned within the last 5 years. To apply, send CV, cover letter, and contact information for three letters of reference to:
