The following bullets are taken from the Special Requirements section of the Program Announcement.
Research Training Program
1. The program must develop the skills of potential trainees through a variety of workshops or other interventions. The program is expected to include a plan for determining trainee experience and needs and for monitoring progress to accomplish desired goals.
2. The program must develop trainee skills in understanding research, applying their critical abilities to conducting research, identifying problems in the process of conducting research, and raising questions and proposing solutions to resolving problems. Trainees must be prepared to communicate their research findings in writing and orally as they pursue future research training.
3. Institutional data must include:
- The total number of students from underrepresented groups in the participating science departments;
- the number of honors students from underrepresented groups in the participating departments;
- the number of junior/senior honors students from underrepresented groups;
- the number of students from underrepresented groups graduating per year;
- the number of students from underrepresented groups who enroll in Ph.D. programs;
- the number of students from underrepresented groups who enroll in professional degree programs; and,
- the number of students from underrepresented groups who participate in post-baccalaureate programs.
Past Training Record
4. This section must describe the last 5-year research training record of the applicant institution in sending its baccalaureates on to Ph.D. and/or MD-Ph.D. programs in the biomedical and behavioral sciences. A renewal application will also describe the past research training record of the MARC program in developing the educational outcomes of potential trainees and trainees.
Institutional Commitment
5. The applicant institution must provide information that documents a commitment to the proposed research training program’s goals and assurance that the institution intends the MARC program to be an integral part of its research and research training endeavor. While cost sharing is not required, the applicant institution should show that funds for program activities, including financial support for trainees, are not merely being substituted for institutional resources.
