Who Pays for e-Junk? Who Pays for e-Junk?

Richard Dahl

Abstract

As some state and local governments in the United States are just beginning to grapple with the growing flood of discarded electronics equipment into their already stretched-to-capacity landfills, California and Massachusetts have already mandated steps to ease the financial and environmental burden these products create once they become obsolete. Other groups have banded together to advocate a national electronics recycling system, though difficult questions remain on how to fund such a program and who should take responsibility for it. Many call for manufacturers to take on a bigger share of this load, and some industry players, including retailers, are testing small-scale recycling programs.
