Mini-Guide to the NCICB Web Site

The primary sections of the NCICB web site are Infrastructure, Tools, and Projects.
The Projects section contains cancer research activities supported by both the applications in the Tools section and the infrastructure components. Projects is a primary section of the NCICB web site. Tools is a primary section of the NCICB web site. Tools contains many applications built using the infrastructure components. The tools section also contains a variety of general bioinformatics applications. Infrastructure is a primary section of the NCICB web site. Infrastructure contains building blocks for developing standards-based, interoperable bioinformatics systems.
Infrastructure Infrastructure
  • Provides detailed descriptions and access to the building blocks and the interoperability framework the NCI uses to develop cancer information management systems.

  • Lists areas in which the NCICB is seeking participation in expanding the various open source development activities.

  • Provides access to user groups and documentation used by developers working with caCORE components.

Tools Tools
  • Provides access to a variety of bioinformatics research tools in the areas of biology, genomics, proteomics, clinical trials support, laboratory support, and vocabulary and common data elements.

A few of these tools are downloadable, but most are web-based. In some cases, the web-based tools require an account which is easily obtainable. Downloadable tools will also be listed in the Downloads section.

Projects Projects
  • Describes research efforts that are supported by the components in the Infrastructure section and the applications in the Tools section.

For example, the cancer Biomedical Informatics Grid™, or caBIG™, is a voluntary network or grid connecting individuals and institutions to enable the sharing of data and tools, creating a World Wide Web of cancer research. The grid relies on the core-level Infrastructure components to provide a high-level of interoperability and common data standards. caBIG™ is also delivering applications built using Infrastructure components.
