Research Description:
Radiochemistry in the discovery, development and evaluation of novel probes for PET studies of neurospsychiatric disorders

The new PET Radiopharmaceutical Sciences Section of the Molecular Imaging Branch (NIMH) is focussed on discovering, developing and evaluating novel probes for investigations in neuropsychiatric disorders, using the powerful imaging technique of positron emission tomography (PET). This programme is based on Radiochemistry, principally, with the short-lived cyclotron-produced radionuclides carbon-11 (t1/2 = 20.3 min) and fluorine-18 (t1/2 = 109.7 min). Part of the programme pursues methodological advances in this area, so that they may be readily applied in finding new useful probes for PET. Extensive organic synthesis of many series of compounds as possible leads to new PET probes is also undertaken. Promising radioligands are evaluated in vitro, in animals and ultimately in humans, using a range of biological and bioradioanalytical techniques. Successful probes will find application in cliincial studies directed at gaining a better understanding of brain disease processes and promoting better treatment or therapy.
