R21-Exploratory/Development Grants

The Neuroscience and Neuropsychology of Aging (NNA) Program accepts R21 applications in all areas of NNA’s mission. Examples include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Investigation of the molecular and cellular bases of age-related cognitive change and dementia and the mechanisms underlying the cellular specificity of such changes.
     
  • The impact of and mechanisms by which comorbidities exacerbate cognitive change with age and dementia.
     
  • Development or improvement of gene transfer methods for delivery of therapeutically important molecules or for targeted gene overexpression or silencing (e.g., through utilization of interference RNA) to study mechanisms underlying changes in brain structure and function in aging and neurodegenerative disorders.
     
  • Identification and testing in model systems of novel treatment strategies for cognitive aging and dementia.
     
  • Novel strategies for identifying molecular and imaging markers specific for persons at risk for age-related cognitive change and dementia and persons on the continuum of decline.
     
  • Development of novel methods to identify and monitor neural stem cells in models of brain aging and neurodegenerative disorders.
     
  • Investigation of both normal and disease-associated changes in sensory and motor systems, from receptor level through central nervous system pathways to cortical processing of perceptual and motor responses, motor planning, and sensorimotor integration.
     
  • New approaches to understanding the complex genetics and gene-environment interactions in late-onset Alzheimer's disease.
