H. R. 7199 —The Medical Information and Treatment Access Act

On September 28, 2008, Representative Chris Cannon (R-UT) introduced H.R. 7199, the Medical Information and Treatment Access Act. The purpose of the bill is to link in one place health-related Internet sites within HHS. Provisions of interest to NIH would require that the Secretary ensure a user can enter the name of a disease or condition which result in links to clinicaltrials.gov, the clinicaltrials.gov registry and results data base, information on how to enroll in a clinical trial, and to other public NIH databases that provide information on specific diseases or conditions. The bill would also establish the John Eisenberg Forum Regarding Complementary and Alternative Medicine at NCCAM, a voluntary program in which health practitioners would provide the Center with information on complementary and alternative treatment practices. In addition, NCCAM would be required to consult with the FDA on how to collect information from health care practitioners on the effects of dietary supplements and food on diseases and disorders. H.R. 7199 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
