H. R. 6567 —The Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Enhancement Act

On July 22, 2008, Representative Brian Baird (D-WA) introduced H.R. 6567, the Pulmonary Fibrosis Research Enhancement Act. Provisions would (1) encourage the Director of NHLBI to expand, intensify and coordinate Institute activities with respect to pulmonary fibrosis (PF) research; (2) require the Secretary of HHS to convene a national summit every three years of researchers, representatives of academic institutions, Federal and State policymakers, public health professionals, patients, patient advocates, and others with expertise in research and care of PF to provide a detailed overview of NIH current research activities, as well as to discuss and solicit input related to potential collaborations between NIH, the CDC and other Federal agencies related to PF research, treatment and prevention; (3) require the Director of NIH to prepare and submit to relevant committees of Congress a report on the proceedings of the summit and a description of NIH conducted and supported research, education and other relevant activities; and (4) require the Secretary, acting through the Director of CDC, to develop a system to collect data on PF and other related interstitial lung diseases, including U.S. incidence and prevalence. H.R. 6567 was referred to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
