The Risk Where You Live The Risk Where You Live

Charles W. Schmidt

Abstract

Soon to be unveiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) , the latest version of the Risk-Screening Environmental Indicators model promises to let users quickly determine the pollution impacts of industries within a selected square kilometer of the United States. Developed as part of the EPA's community right-to-know initiatives, the model provides data in three formats: annual chemical releases by facility, ranking of model results by chemical hazards, and a risk ranking of potential exposures to a specific actual population. Although not a true risk assessment tool, the model still is heralded by many as being highly valuable for environmental justice and health advocates, policy makers, and EPA scientists.
