A Cleaner Way to Color Cotton A Cleaner Way to Color Cotton

Lance Frazer

Abstract

Cotton fabrics are widely used for clothing and household uses. Cotton dyeing is a complicated and time-consuming process that requires large amounts of water and energy. It also produces large amounts of salt-laden wastewater. Textile scientists are working on a process that will not only speed up the dyeing process, but will reduce the use of these often scarce resources as well as the amount of chemicals left to dispose of afterward. Despite its promise, implementing the process in a business that is very tradition-bound will take effort.
