Abstract

Mosquitoes may be mankind’s worst animal enemy, transmitting diseases that kill millions of people each year. Scientists are working to build a new arsenal of mosquito repellents based on the rapidly growing amount of genomic information being gathered about these pesky insects. Different groups are studying how repellents might interfere with mosquitoes’ sense of smell by blocking critical proteins that allow the insects to sense their human prey.
